Alexandre Rodrigues is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, educator, and pífano (bamboo flute) maker, with a postgraduate degree in Frevo Performance Practices. Born in Itapissuma, Pernambuco, and currently based in São Paulo, he develops original work that places the pífano at the center, exploring unprecedented experimentation with the instrument. At the same time, his music creates a dialogue between jazz and Afro-Indigenous traditions, highlighting one of the most beautiful aspects of popular culture: the plurality of sounds and melodic possibilities. He has performed alongside major names in Brazilian music, including Wilson das Neves, Mariene Castro, Geraldo Azevedo, Elba Ramalho, and Fabiana Cozza.

Alexandre was introduced to the pífano at the age of 16 through Egildo Vieira and Cacá Malaquias. It was with Egildo that he acquired his first pífano and received his initial guidance on the instrument. Years later, he moved to the agreste region of Pernambuco, where he earned a degree in Popular Brazilian Music and came into contact with master pífano players such as João do Pife, Edmilson do Pífano, Biu do Pife, Marcos do Pífano, among others. His passion for the pífano tradition and his modern musical references converge in his compositions, which connect the sounds of Northeastern Pernambuco’s regional music—such as frevo, maracatu de baque solto, caboclinho, and baião—with jazz-inspired melodies. In live performances, Alexandre Rodrigues creates an experimental environment where his compositions engage with urban musicality while always preserving traditional knowledge.
